Questa è la storia di 4 persone chiamate Ognuno, Qualcuno, Ciascuno e Nessuno. C'era un lavoro importante da fare e Ognuno era sicuro che Qualcuno lo avrebbe fatto. Ciascuno poteva farlo, ma Nessuno lo fece, Qualcuno si arrabbiò perché era il lavoro di Ognuno. Ognuno pensò che Ciascuno potesse farlo, ma Ognuno capì che Nessuno l'avrebbe fatto. Finì che Ognuno incolpò Qualcuno perché Nessuno fece ciò che Ciascuno avrebbe potuto fare.

Comunque a marzo 2008 qui http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=692658 (post 8) dicono che i driver nvidia funzionano per la tua scheda grafica. Il file xorg modificato lo chiami xorg.conf, vero? (Non si sa mai... XD)

si il file lo sovrascrivo.
Per prova, cambia il driver della scheda in "nv" invece che "vesa" e posta conf. e log

io quando ho avuto questo tipo di problema ho preso il disco di installazione di ubuntu,ho fatto partire la versione live e poi ho copiato il contenuto del file xorg.conf nella mia installazione locale ( avevo debian ) e tutto ha funzionato a meraviglia!
