Suspend to Ram

Ciao ragazzi,
io posseggo una gloriosa asus k7v133, e vorrei sapere come attivare la funzione Suspend to Ram e come dovrebbe funzionare. In pratica, ho provato ad attivarla da Bios, ma non cambia niente rispetto la sospensione normale. In teoria non dovrebbe spegnersi tutto compresa la ventola dell'alimentatore?
Ho come SO win98SE e non so se dipende da lui o dall'hardware.

Suspend-to-RAM (STR) occurs when a system enters a low-power state. Information on system configuration, open applications, and active files is stored in main memory (RAM ), while most of the system's other components are turned off. A system in STR can use as little as 5 watts of power, with most of it going to main memory for data maintenance.


If left in STR, a system may be programmed to waken, so it can perform tasks at any given time. If the power is interrupted, then the system will undergo a normal reboot, restoring full power to the machine and loosing any information not saved to the hard disk.

Overview
Suspend to RAM allows the system / application state to be saved in Random Access Memory when the system is in suspend mode. This mode uses very little power and is virtually equivalent to the system being turned completely off. However, when the system is activated again the long boot process is avoided and the system will "wake up" to the previous state very quickly - The Instant On PC.

The Key - Suspend to RAM

Setup Requirements

BIOS
ENABLE the ACPI option in motherboard BIOS
Set ACPI Suspend Type to "S3"

Operating System
Ensure ACPI is enabled in Windows 98
Install Windows 98 and set it ACPI ready by typing "SETUP / P J" - Microsoft also has instructions to convert an installed system to ACPI-ready on its KnowledgeBase (Involves Registry Entries Changes):
Using Registry Editor, add the "ACPIOption" (without quotation marks) string value with a value data of 1 to the following registry key:
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Detect"
If the value "ACPICheckDate" exists, DELETE this value, or the ACPI detection will not take place.
Go to Control Panel -> Add New Hardware and search for new hardware to detect the new ACPI hardware.
Enter Control Panel and click "Power Management" icon
Use "System Standby time" option to set time to enter standby mode
Enter Advanced menu to set "Power Button" as "Standby"
When sleep key is pressed or power is switched off, Windows 98 will enter "Suspend to RAM" S3 mode
When wake-up key is pressed or power is turned on, all operation resume

grazie frenc, sei una garanzia, però ancora non capisco una cosa: io credevo che si spegnesse tutto ma rimanesse alimentata la RAM tramite +5VSB, tanto per intenderci, quella che gestisce il Wake on Lan quando il computer è spento (io ce l'ho e funziona). Se è vero che rimane acceso l'alimentatore, e di conseguenza ventole e ventoline, qual'è il vantaggio rispetto al normale stand-by?

Ok:
ci dovremmo essere anche se non capisco cosa intende per "auxiliary power source and split power plane" e per "ACPI compliant add-on cards". Tutto il mio HW è abbastanza recente e non dovrebbe dare problemi.

Quando il PC dovrebbe entrare in STR si comporta esattamente come uno stand-by: si spegne il monitor (Philips 109B10) e l'hard-disk (IBM DJNA), ma rimane acceso masterizzatore (Yamaha 8424 ide) e CD-ROM, più tutte le ventole del PC (HD cooler, 4 ventole, alimentatore). Le uniche ventoline che si spengono sono quelle del dissi, perchè collegate direttamente alla MB. Credo sia tutto.

ma se premi il pulsante di spegnimento?

normalmente dovrebbe attivare la procedura di kiusura del so e spegnersi. in str, da kuel ke ho kapito, ti da' proprio l'opz voluta.

allora, premendo il tasto power sulla tastiera, il PC va nel solito stand-by, se premo il tasto del cabinet, si spegne normalmente, praticamente come quando non è attivato nessun str.
